Diane von Fürstenberg is a fashion designer, creator of DVF located in New York's Meatpacking District.

Diane Simone Michelle von Fürstenberg, née Halfin, was born on December 31, 1946 in Brussels, Belgium. Diane von Fürstenberg is from an upper-middle class Jewish household. Her father, Leon Halfin, was Russian-born and spent World War II in Switzerland. Her mother, Liliane Nahmias, was Greek-born who survived the Holocaust. Diane von Fürstenberg studied economics at the University of Geneva in Switzerland.

At age 18, she met Prince Egon of Fürstenberg, the elder son of a German prince and an heiress to the Fiat automotive fortune. They got married in 1969 but divorced three years later. The couple had 2 children, Prince Alexandre and Princess Tatiana, who were born in New York. She is now the grandmother of 3 children. The Fürstenbergs' marriage was considered dynastic, as Diane became Princess Diane of Fürstenberg at the time of the wedding. According to Bernardine Morris's article in The New York Times, Diane von Fürstenberg, then divorced from her first husband, had dropped her title from use in her professional life.

She landed in the fashion industry in 1972. In 1973, she became famous for her iconic knitted jersey wrap dress, which, due to its important influence on women's fashion, is in the collection of the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. She has since developed a line of top-notch women's apparel available in a selection of stores such as Bergdorf Goodman, Nordstrom, Saks Fifth Avenue, and Neiman Marcus. She is a recipient of The International Center in New York's Award of Excellence.

In 1985 she temporarily moved to Paris, France where she founded Salvy, a French-language publishing house. After the death of artist Lowell Nesbitt in 1993, Diane von Fürstenberg purchased Nesbitt's studio and residence at 389 West 12th Street. The Lowell Nesbitt studio became a trendy gathering place for major art world figures, celebrities and dignitaries including American leading figure in the visual art movement Andy Warhol. Diane von Fürstenberg used the structure until the early 2000’s as her studio and residence. The place was then sold and demolished to make space for a new high-rise building, and she consequently moved to 874 Washington Street where she now operates DVF. Reportedly involved since the 1970s with American media magnate Barry Diller, Diane married him in 2001. In 2002, she became a naturalized U.S. citizen.

She published her memoirs, "Diane: A Signature Life" (Simon & Schuster; 1998), and was awarded a lifetime achievement award by the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) in 2005. In 2006, she was named president of the CFDA. In 2008, she appeared on TV as a judge on several episodes of Project Runway.
