Born in Connecticut and raised between New York and Connecticut, Olivia Palermo is the daughter of Douglas Palermo, a prosperous real estate developer. She moved to New York to attend the New School. She quickly emerged onto the social scene and made it to the society "It" list with some help from a publicist and her long-time childhood friend, Byrdie Bell. She appeared on the cover of New York magazine in 2007. She is currently working at DVF.

In 2008, she became Whitney's colleague and was cast as a main character on the MTV reality show The City for a 'modest' salary of $12K per episode, according to the New York Post. Throughout the first season of the show, Whitney and Olivia never really clicked. On several occasions, Olivia unsuccessfully tried to convince Whitney to ditch her crowd of Downtown hipsters for the Uptown society.
